Have you ever dreamed of living in the clouds, surrounded by fresh air and bright white light? Well, Cloud House is about as close as you can get to that heavenly dream here on earth...
Designed by Akin Atelier, this Bondi home is filled with fresh air and natural light. The front of the home is protected from the street; you'd have no idea how open and bright the interiors are if you're the judging books by covers type. The upper floor is cantilevered to create a carport underneath, while timber screens and playful circular openings give little away, creating a quiet and private sanctuary beyond. As you enter via the side of the house, however, the full extent of the central courtyard and the light-filled interiors reveal themselves.
The home wraps around this central courtyard, allowing the main living space to open onto the southern back yard without sacrificing north light. In fact, an angled ceiling over the living area bounces light deep into the home. Glass doors slide away on three sides of the living space, opening it completely to the outdoors.
Light is brought into the home in a number of ways. Skylights over the stairs and bathroom fill even these secondary spaces bright light. The circulation space around the courtyard even opens up to the outdoors with sliding glass windows turning the hallway into a covered breezeway.
Corners are playfully softened throughout, lending a laid-back beachside feel to the home such as the curved concrete plinth and a wall of joinery which curves subtly into the wall.
Sliding timber screens protect the main bedroom from adjacent neighbours, while still providing the flexibility to slide open to enjoy the sun and views over the backyard.
Texture was also an important consideration to ensure the home doesn't feel sterile. A palette of whites and soft greys are warmed by timber floors and screens creating a beachy feel, while bagged brickwork creates a beautiful play of light.
By paying close attention to the quality of light throughout this home, the architects have created a serene and relaxed home which feels like floating on cloud nine.
