The architects knew Rob and Jess for many years after building a relationship by specifying their vanities and custom joinery, making Woodworker's Cottage and Barn an excellent collaboration which, naturally, incorporates plenty of custom timber joinery and numerous Loughlin Furniture pieces...
Inspired by the classic Australian cottages which once dotted this coastal peninsular on the New South Wales Central Coast, the renovation is simple and laid-back to show off the exquisite craftsmanship of the timber joinery and furniture.
The project was completed in two stages. The first stage was the renovation and addition to the original cottage and the second was a separate barn addition which creates a flexible space that can be used as a parents retreat, a playroom for the kids or an alternative second living area depending on the family's needs.
Most of the interior has been reworked, opening it up and out to feel lighter and brighter. A small addition to the main house accommodates new bedrooms, a main bedroom suite and an open-plan living area opening onto a full-width deck and the backyard. Barn-style sliding doors open off the living areas into bedroom spaces to create a rustic aestheic.
Joinery pieces made by Loughlin Furniture include a custom timber kitchen, timber vanities and rattan entertain unit from their Pacific Collection, bringing plenty of relaxed coastal vibes to the home.
Out the back, the barn has a steep-pitched roof with a loft. Skylights fill the barn with light, while feature timber doors, staircase and blukhead feature show off the client's woodworking skills.
