A for Architecture

A for Architecture is a Melbourne studio run by Anna Rozen. It works mainly on homes, including new houses and renovations "of all types and sizes". Their about page reads like a short manifesto: "We believe that bigger is not necessarily better." They also believe buildings "should be energy efficient, space efficient and cost efficient", and they love "texture, pattern and contrast".

You can see that thinking in Valiant House, a narrow workers cottage on the smallest block in a quiet one-way street. As in so many unrenovated inner-city homes, the bathroom sat at the rear and was the only room with an outlook. The owners wanted a connection to the rear garden and flexible spaces where the kids could play or the parents could retreat. The renovation and upstairs addition deliver that without taking up too much of the garden.

Why Does the Bathroom Often Have the Best View in Workers Cottages?

Like many un-renovated inner-city homes, the bathroom of this Melbourne workers cottage had the best light and views in the house!
