a21studio Architecture on Lunchbox Architect

a21studio Architecture is a practice based in Vietnam. Their work on Lunchbox, The Nest, is an affordable home in a rapidly developing urban area where houses are usually built from concrete and brick. Instead, a21studio used a simple open-air steel structure, which kept both the budget and the construction time down.

The living area flows straight into the garden, and the only walls are screens of greenery, so the plants become the walls. Richly patterned tiles add a fun, contemporary touch to the otherwise minimal 40-square-metre space, and over time a green buffer will wrap the whole house, creating a lush, private nest away from the hectic city.
