Aileen Sage Architects on Lunchbox Architect

Aileen Sage is a Sydney-based design collective providing architectural, landscape, heritage and integrated public art services. The name comes from the middle names of its founders, Isabelle Aileen Toland and Amelia Sage Holliday, who started the practice in 2013. It has since grown from a partnership of two into a team of more than ten designers, architects and researchers. Their work ranges from homes to mixed-use developments, community and cultural buildings, and adaptive reuse on historically significant sites. As they put it, "We lead with integrity, collaborate with intent, embrace the unexpected and always look for moments of joy."

Courtyard House in Paddington was the practice's first completed home, a reinterpretation of the traditional terrace built on the site of a derelict Victorian-era house. It was a family commission, designed to reference the terraces and materiality of the area without trying to replicate them.

A reinterpretation of a traditional terrace home keeps council happy, while a series of courtyards inject life into the home.
