Archier on Lunchbox Architect
Archier is an architecture and design practice whose work covers residential, commercial and government architecture, landscape projects, and the design and manufacture of furniture, lighting and prefab. Their tagline is "Architecture driven by performance", and their ethos is simple: "We create design experiences that contribute to a better quality of life." They collaborate closely with each other, their clients and "Australia's best makers" to find solutions specific to each project.
Their three projects on Lunchbox show that hands-on approach. Sawmill House in Yackandandah is a home for a regional sculptor, built from 270 one-tonne concrete blocks that would otherwise have gone to waste, with the design developed on site alongside the client. For Ashfield Apartment, the architects renovated a 1960s flat themselves, down to laying the oak herringbone floor and building the birch ply kitchen. And Five Yards House in Hobart is a new home for retirement that opens onto four courtyards and a garden through full-height double-glazed doors.
