Architect George

Architect George is an emerging architecture and interiors studio in Sydney, led by director and nominated architect Dean Williams with design director Cameron Deynzer, also a registered architect. And no, nobody named George works there. "George" is a hypothetical nobody who stands for everyone involved in creating their projects, loosely inspired by George Costanza's "summer of George". The studio aims for every home to be unique: "We strive to create meaningful and delightful buildings that are a direct response to our clients and site opportunities."

Both of their homes on Lunchbox show how much can come from a small footprint. House in Newtown is a 60-square-metre home on a site just 3.6 metres wide, using light wells, curves and clever joinery to feel far bigger than it is. House in Tasmania (Big Red), on a hill overlooking the coast outside Hobart, is a contemporary take on the classic Aussie beach shack, split into two pavilions to sit comfortably among the humble homes along the water.

Good design means you can live larger with less, meaning this compact home feels bright, spacious and surrounded by greenery.

Two pavilions offset to capture light and views and create a sheltered courtyard help this home look and feel much larger than it is.
