Campbell Architecture on Lunchbox Architect
Campbell Architecture is a boutique Sydney practice founded in 2011 by director and nominated architect Hugh Campbell. It specialises in single homes, both new builds and renovations, from waterfront houses in Hunters Hill to heritage renovations in Darling Point and beach houses at Palm Beach. Taking only a few projects a year, the team describes itself as "unashamedly high-touch, high service architects" and avoids a prescriptive style, treating each project as "an opportunity to explore the meaning of home with each client." Their aim: "calm, refined & enduring homes".
On Lunchbox, House C3 continues the practice's exploration of traditional form used in a contemporary way. It's a new home among 19th-century workers' cottages in Sydney that "neither brashly shouts difference nor resorts to historical pastiche". The brief was a house filled with natural light without resorting to dank internal courts, so skylights, passive design and concrete thermal mass do the work behind its timber-clad exterior.

House C3 Balances Modernity with its 19th Century Neighbours
House C3 sits comfortably in its neighbourhood of 19th century workers' cottages neither shouting its modernity nor mimicking the neighbours.
