Caroline Di Costa Architect
Caroline Di Costa Architect's work on Lunchbox is Casa 31_4 Room House in Perth, a Queen Anne/Federation-style house transformed into a deeply personal modern home. It's also, as we put it at the time, Australia's most livable Coolgardie safe: water trickles down the shade-cloth skin of the rear extension, and as breezes and heat evaporate it, the house inside is cooled.
From the street you'd never know. The sizeable extension is hidden to keep the historic frontage intact, with only the old roof's barge scrolls reappearing on the front fence. Inside, rather than covering the past, the architect-owners scraped, layered and peeled back to express the home's history, "knowing what to keep, what to reveal and what to remove."
