Cathi Colla Architects

Cathi Colla Architects is now COLLA Studio, "COLLA" being the centre of collaboration. The Melbourne practice designs all kinds of homes, from single and multi-generational houses to terraces, townhouses and apartments, new builds, alterations and adaptive reuse, with a focus on healthy, high-performance and Passivhaus homes. Their motto is "Design with conscience". In their words, "Building a healthy, robust, energy efficient home should be the standard, not a luxury."

On Lunchbox, Micro Addition shows how little extra space a home might really need. A double-fronted heritage house on a seven-metre-wide site in North Fitzroy suffered from a dark, dysfunctional rear addition. Through "a process of subtraction", the architects removed the rooms that didn't work and rearranged the rest into a logical flow, adding just five square metres of new floor area to transform the home and reconnect it with the garden.
