Crosson Architects

Crosson Architects is an Auckland architecture practice led by Ken Crosson. Its work spans new homes, multi-unit housing, alterations, heritage, commercial projects and masterplanning, with a long list of houses and baches from the Coromandel to Queenstown.

"Considered and engaging design is a way of life for the team at Crosson," the practice says. It sees great architecture as coming from positive collaboration, above all between client and architect, and considers "the physical, psychological and spiritual" in pursuit of an outcome that is "unique and life enhancing."

Both of its Lunchbox projects are on the Coromandel Peninsula. Whangapoua, the hut on sleds, sits in a coastal erosion zone where every structure must be removable, so it can be towed away by tractor. Coromandel Bach reinterprets the New Zealand bach tradition, with its crafted timber, expressed structure, cladding and joinery, as a container sitting lightly on the land.

Sled House: A House You Can Relocate With a Tractor?

Sled House sits in two sleds making relocating it with a tractor a cinch. The whole area is within a coastal erosion zone; All structures must be removable.

Coromandel Bach: Beach House (Literally) Opens to the View

Coromandel Bach was conceived as a container sitting lightly on the land for habitation. A 'bach' is a New Zealand term for a simple holiday shack.
