Cykel Architecture on Lunchbox Architect

Cykel Architecture is a Hobart-based practice, and their work on Lunchbox is firmly rooted in Tasmanian soil. Holly Tree Farm sits at Castle Forbes Bay in the Huon Valley, in Tasmania's south, and replaced a family home that had burned down. It was designed for a young, busy family who run several animals on the property. The 140-square-metre house sits between the existing rural buildings, and its shape and materials take their cues from the farm buildings around it.

It's a house that remembers what came before: bricks from the old farmhouse now line the passage. It's also built to hold on to the sun. Large windows (the kind you sit and read by) bring in the light, a dark-oiled concrete slab with hydronic heating soaks up warmth, and thermally broken double glazing keeps it in. Outside, it's concrete block and stained plywood.

Holly Tree Farm is a Modern Family Home With Traces of the Past

Holly Tree Farm replaces a home which was sadly lost in a fire in style — by reusing salvaged materials and mimicking surrounding buildings.
