David Langston-Jones Architect

David Langston-Jones is a Sydney architect based in Alexandria. Most of his work, he says, "consists of small, two to three bedroom houses with modest services, suitable for the 21st Century" – houses for people who see their surroundings "not as castles to command, but to use socially in conjunction with others." His projects range from Sydney terraces and duplexes to houses in Queensland and the Sunshine Coast University Chancellery.

He works independently, without assistants, to keep the concept consistent from first sketches through approvals to realisation, and his houses explore how to live with ever-more resourcefulness in space and materials, including a constructional system based on prefabricated steel.

On Lunchbox, Tamarama Semi Detached is a simple, low-budget renovation in one of Sydney's glossiest beachside suburbs, built from simple materials with an ethos of "architecture of modest invention" and a home that is confident and assured despite its modest price tag.
