Field Labs

Field Labs is a small Hobart architecture practice led by director and architect James Wilson, who was a founding director of Room 11 for a decade before starting Field Labs in 2015. The practice is "focused on creating quality architecture through considered observation, investigation, and exploration of environment and outcomes."

Its aim is liveable, functional and enjoyable environments "that respond uniquely to our topography and climate". Work across southern Tasmania includes new houses at Margate, Fern Tree, Sandford, Dodges Ferry and in the Huon Valley, a beach house at Orford, and the fit-out of the Agrarian Kitchen Eatery and Store in New Norfolk.

On Lunchbox, Castray Apartment converts a loft in an 1838 warehouse in Salamanca, designed by colonial architect John Lee Archer, into a two-bedroom home for a gallery owner. The original timber columns are retained, with black-painted ply and steel joinery dividing the space into zones within the existing grid.
