Freadman White Architects

Freadman White Architects is a Melbourne architecture practice. Its Lunchbox project, Hoddle House, was designed to nurture the changing needs of a young family over time.

The existing house was a 1930s brick home with a redundant 1970s addition at the rear. Rather than demolish it, the architects incorporated the existing walls of the old extension into the new design, saving money, time and effort. The result is a set of generous, flexible spaces – including a rumpus room for the children to explore – that open to a deck and garden under raked ceilings and clerestory windows.

If These Walls Could Talk They'd Tell You Their Cost-Saving Secret...

Rather than demolish and rebuild the rear 1970s addition to this home, the architect incorporated the walls into new, thicker walls.
