Khab Architects

Khab Architects is an Adelaide practice led by Kirsty Hewitt and director Adam Brown, who describe themselves as "a dedicated architecture practice passionate about the work we do." Their residential work runs from city terrace alterations and extensions to new houses on coastal and country sites. It sits alongside tourism, education, community projects and social and specialist disability housing.

Their approach? "Balance the practical with the delightful." Each project is a "recipe" of site, client and budget, and their rule is simple: "do not over-season the recipe." They are also firm believers that smaller, well-made spaces beat big clumsy ones, putting the money into quality rather than floor area. Their Spinifex House won the John S Chappel Award for New Houses at the 2020 AIA SA Awards.

On Lunchbox, Little at Large in the Clare Valley puts that thinking to work. It's a compact family home under a big, sheltering inverted-truss roof, which also funnels rain into the tanks that supply all of the family's water. A rammed earth spine wall keeps the bedrooms cool and dark.
