McBride Charles Ryan

McBride Charles Ryan (MCR) is a Melbourne studio-based design practice, recognised internationally for quality architecture, urban and interior design. It was established in 1988 by co-founders Debbie Ryan and Robert McBride, who continue to guide its design direction, key decisions and personal, empathetic approach.

The practice's designs are engaging and express the unique identity of each client and community, balanced by a robust, sensible and pragmatic approach to project management and documentation. MCR delivers projects on budget, but its designs "never appear to be constrained by their budget", responding in a unique way to both the urban environment and the culture, needs and traditions of its clients.

On Lunchbox, Cloud House in Fitzroy North keeps a traditional Victorian-era frontage, with only a bright floral carpet at the front door hinting at the radical cloud-shaped extension behind, where a bright red kitchen sits at the heart of the home.

Cloud House: Conservative in Front, But a Radical Surprise Out Back

The Cloud House is a recent home extension by architects, McBride Charles Ryan. From the front it's a typical home. From the back, it's a whole other story.
