McGann Architects

McGann Architects is a Melbourne-based architectural and design practice.

Its Lunchbox project, Canterbury Studio, shows how inner-city backyards can help with housing affordability without building new car-dependent suburbs on the city fringes. The owners of a Middle Park home found space above the garage at the rear of their block, and the architects created a high-quality studio apartment there, conceived as a metal-clad box hovering above the red brick garage. Flexible by design, it could serve as a guest suite, a young adult's apartment or a source of rental income.

This Studio Shows Us What's Possible in Our Own Backyard...

With housing (un)affordability growing and our city limits bursting, this project shows us there's still space in the inner city.
