Nicholas Burns Associates

Nicholas Burns Associates, now Studio Nicholas Burns, approaches design "with the intention to create meaningful spaces that connect people to nature and elevate everyday experience to improve quality of life". The studio has primary bases in Australia, Indonesia and Portugal, and works on projects globally with a network of local partners.

It seeks to understand the person and place before design ideas enter the picture, researching climate, planning, available materials and crafts so that each design distils many variables into a unique, personal outcome. Materials and detailing are used carefully as part of a coherent whole, so that framed views, light and shadow become the elements perceived.

On Lunchbox, Johanna House sits on a hilltop within 100 acres of untouched bushland beside a national park, overlooking the ocean along the Great Ocean Road. It is a home of contrasts, balancing the weight and opacity of rammed earth against the lightness and transparency of glazing.
