POD (People Oriented Design)
POD (People Oriented Design) is based in Cairns in Far North Queensland, offering architecture, project management, landscape architecture, education, community engagement and research.
The practice has developed a philosophy it calls Least House Necessary: considering what a household actually needs rather than what it might need, and investing the savings in design that improves daily life.
On Lunchbox, Gavin Street Residence demonstrates the idea on a long, steep, narrow east-facing site in the lower flanks of the McAlister Range, north of Cairns. The internal area is a compact 98 square metres, balanced by generous outdoor living and a pool, with a narrow plan and verandahs front and back suited to the hot tropical climate.

How Much House Do You Need? How About the Least House Necessary?
This environmentally-considerate home is carefully planned to ensure it's compact yet spacious: the least house necessary.
