Vaughn McQuarrie Architects on Lunchbox Architect

Vaughn McQuarrie Architects is an architecture practice whose featured work is in New Zealand.

On Lunchbox, Palm Beach House sits beneath a large pōhutukawa tree on a steep, bush-covered site a few hundred metres up a valley from Palm Beach on Waiheke Island. The house negotiates the slope as a series of suspended indoor and outdoor spaces linked by external bridges and stairs, so moving between rooms brings the owners into direct contact with nature. Because access was difficult and the aim was to minimise waste, the design was based on factory sheet sizes that could be carried in by hand and fixed without cutting, with glue-laminated timber framing assembled on site.
