Work by Liz and Alex is the architectural partnership behind a thoughtful barn conversion in Tasmania.
On Lunchbox, #thebarnTAS in Hobart follows the Burra Charter mantra of "do as much as necessary, as little as possible". Much of the original stone, timber and plasterwork is retained, with new insertions added only where services and amenity required them, and made to read clearly as new. Within the barn's original envelope sit two distinct spaces: a long, low room for dining and a tall, smaller space that reveals the full height of the building and the underside of its original roof shingles, painstakingly cleaned by the architects. New glazing sits flush with the sandstone outside, while the inserted window boxes double as storage inside.

Barn Conversion Does "As Much As Necessary, As Little As Possible"
This incredible barn conversion retains much of the original stone and timber work highlighted against new insertions where necessary.
