On Lunchbox, Courtyard Deck House in Hampton answers a brief for "a home where the kids could drag the outside inside", as relaxed as a beach house but flexible enough for every stage of family life. The existing house turned its back on a large north-facing garden, so a laid-back rear addition reorients the home towards the backyard, separated from the original by a courtyard deck with large glass sliding doors that keep light and breezes flowing. The original house becomes a quiet zone of bedrooms, study and lounge, while the addition's social areas are "carved out" of one fluid space that spills into the garden.

A Courtyard Deck's the Perfect Way to Combine Old and New at This Home

A decked courtyard connects this existing home and extension, providing light, breezes and an indoor-outdoor connection to old and new.
