Ande Bunbury Architects

Ande Bunbury Architects (ABA) is a Melbourne practice that has been designing sustainable projects for more than 20 years. Their focus is "homes for a changing climate": modest, flexible, all-electric houses, often rated 8 to 10 stars, that can produce more power than they use. Passive solar principles are, as they put it, "in our DNA". They're also firm believers in building less: "Bigger is better is obviously wrong, especially when facing climate change. What we really need is smaller, and smarter." That means retaining and reusing what's already there wherever they can.

Both of their Lunchbox projects show how. Suburban Loci in Mont Albert takes a dark, cold 1950s orange-brick house with a rabbit warren of rooms and, with some careful nips and tucks, turns it into a comfortable, efficient family home. Bike Shed House in Preston is a new passive solar home for an environmentally conscious family of four, with rainwater harvesting, recycled timber and plenty of room for bikes.
