Brad Swartz Architect on Lunchbox Architect
Brad Swartz Architects is a Sydney design practice focused on the inner city, established in 2015. They believe "the best creativity comes out of constraints", embracing the limits of existing buildings and complex sites to come up with clever, original architecture. They also believe in doing more with less: "By renovating existing dwellings and living in a smaller footprint we can foster a more sustainable way for our cities to develop." Their work has been published locally and internationally in more than fifty print and video features.
On Lunchbox, Darlinghurst Apartment is a 27-square-metre apartment designed to comfortably house a couple. The brief sounds modest, a place to live and entertain with generous storage, an internal laundry and a dining space, but fitting it all into such a small footprint took careful design, with built-in joinery and concealed doors doing the heavy lifting. It's an affordable option for inner-city living that challenges the need for urban sprawl.
