Cast Studio
Cast Studio is a Fremantle architecture practice led by director David Barr. It was known as David Barr Architects until 2021, when the team changed its trading name to reflect that its work has "always been about more than one person". They design homes "for all to enjoy, from bespoke private dwellings to social and affordable housing", alongside hospitality and commercial projects. As they put it, "We believe architecture is about more than buildings; it should embrace the human spirit."
Their three Perth projects on Lunchbox date from the David Barr Architects years. Suburban Beach House, designed with Ross Brewin Architecture + Urbanism, crosses a Queenslander with a West Australian beach house for a laid-back family home with a spectacular sunset view. Westbury Crescent Residence in Bicton replaces a derelict lean-to on a Federation home with an addition that plays with light, even funnelling it into the bathroom through a periscope. And YEOVIL, also in Bicton, is a simple, elegant SIPS and OSB addition that could be a prototype for sustainable, affordable homes.
See Suburban Beach House, Westbury Crescent Residence and more of their work on Lunchbox below.
Suburban Beach House: What Happens When You Cross a Queenslander with a West Australian?
No, it's not a Clive Palmer/Gina Rinehart franken-baby. It's a suburban beach house with a view.
Westbury Crescent Residence: Periscope Lets Light Into This Home
A huge periscope is one way to get light into Westbury Crescent Residence without sacrificing privacy. The clever manipulation of light doesn't stop there!
YEOVIL: A SIPS and OSB, ESD Extension. But What Does it All Mean?
A deceptively simple and elegant addition which could be considered a prototype for sustainable, affordable homes.
