Brunsdon Studio

Brunsdon Studio is an architecture practice led by Nic Brunsdon FRAIA. The studio takes on "select residential, hospitality, cultural and adaptive reuse commissions across Australia and Southeast Asia". In their own words, the work is "defined by clear ideas, material precision and a strong relationship to place." The studio is B Corp certified, and Nic is also City Architect for the City of Perth, a part-time civic role he holds alongside the practice.

That relationship to place is front and centre in East Fremantle House, an alteration and addition that begins with a void rather than a room. A generous north-facing courtyard sits at the heart of the plan, and the house wraps around its edge so every room gets a share of the light, breezes and green outlook. The existing brick cottage was left largely intact.

The Most Important Part of This House Is the Space That Is Not Built

A generous north-facing courtyard becomes the best part of this house, bringing light, breezes and the outdoors into every space.
