Townsend + Associates Architects on Lunchbox Architect

Townsend + Associates Architects is a Canberra practice established in 1993 by Bruce and Catherine Townsend. It has built a reputation for high-quality design and construction across small and large commercial projects, single houses and significant multi-unit residential developments, and is regarded as one of the leading firms in Canberra.

The practice has received twenty-three ACT Chapter Australian Institute of Architects awards and a national Robin Boyd Award commendation for housing. While it concentrates mainly on larger projects, it keeps an interest in single houses as a way to continue exploring design with an experimental attitude. Its first-principles approach to design and detailing aims for clarity, elegance, comfort and function.

On Lunchbox, Constable House reworks a 1960s home by architect Rudi Krastins on a steep Red Hill site over two stages and 14 years, using masonry, timber, glass and steel to open it to the outdoors and to views across central Canberra.
