Whispering Smith
Whispering Smith is a female-led architecture practice based in Walyalup-Fremantle, Western Australia, led by principal Kate FitzGerald. It champions sustainable, thoughtful, locally crafted houses and works collaboratively to deliver homes that are a true reflection of their clients.
Driven by social and environmental imperatives, the down-to-earth practice brings a future-facing, multi-generational and collaborative mindset to its work. It deliberately prioritises its clients, integrating their life stories, aspirations and insights into the design process. The practice is head tenant of a warehouse design studio in South Fremantle, which it shares with other creatives.
On Lunchbox, House B in Scarborough renovates and extends a two-bedroom post-war red brick house rather than demolishing it. Sitting high on a sloping block, the house was ideally placed for ocean sunsets and afternoon sea breezes. The new work keeps as much of the original as possible, opening the home to the outdoors and to mature trees retained as part of a wider triplex development.
